Ballet Supplies - Clothes for Specific Body Type?

What clothes should I get for my specific body type? I'm not as tiny as I used to be. I am still short (5 feet - 5 feet 2 inches) but I have added on a lot of weight (I was pulled out of activities due to medical problems). I have a semi-long torso and short legs. What leotards/skirts/or dance pants do you recommend?

Hello Tristin,

Thank you for your query, you ask a very sensible question.

It is very beneficial to start experimenting to see which ballet clothes suit your body type, as it can make a difference to appearance. It is valuable to start creating your own sense of style, as if you ever go to auditions, it is encouraging to see a dancer with flair.

It will probably take time to see what works and what doesn't, but the sooner you start the sooner you'll know - so you are well on the right way!

I would recommend you to go for a high cut on your ballet leotard, which tends to make the legs look longer. Perhaps don't go for a leotard with a too higher neckline, as this could make the body/ torso look longer.

Be aware of the length of your ballet skirts, as a skirt which is too long could make the legs look shorter. A skirt which is shorter can often give the illusion of the legs being longer. Also, the same applies with ballet tutus, if its too long it can drown out the legs.

Have a think about which colour suits you too. There seems to be a belief that black makes you look slimmer, but I am yet to decide whether this is true or not.

Ballet Supplies - What should I wear to a dance camp?

If the instructors do not specify colors and accessories what should I wear to the camp? Classes are from 9 AM - 4:30 PM

If you could you give me some ideas that would be great. The camp is in June. Thank you Odette!

Ballet Supplies - What should I wear to a dance camp?

Hello Tristin,

Thank you for contacting me, it is a pleasure to hear from you.

For dancers, our ballet clothes are centered around a leotard and a pair of pink tights... but there really is so much more! Ballet dance wear is an entire fashion in itself! It's important for dancers to think about what clothes they wear to and from their classes because we want to keep our muscles warm with woolen warm-ups, yet also have light clothing that are loose for in between classes.

Definitely take a look at the workout apparel page so you can be kitted out from head to toe.

The bare essentials to take on the camp would include ballet leotards, ballet tights, dance shoes and a dance tracksuit. Yet it is nice to be stylized as a dancer, so it is great idea to start preparing your dance wardrobe.

Dancers like to be nice and snug in their warm ups and tracksuits, yet wear light layers so they can strip off as they begin to warm up. Take a look at my ballet dance wear to see a checklist to make you have the right dance kit.

Have a look for various colours in your clothing, as it is good to stand out and look stylish in your dance wear.

Ballet leotards can look much different off your body then when you put them on. I would advise for you to try leotards on, but if can't then just be certain about the size and style. Think about the style, cut and material when looking for leotards.

Perhaps take a good variety of leotards, tights, tracksuits and tops so you don't run out of outfits to wear!

All the best,

Odette

Hello Angela,

Thank you for your ballet supplies query, it is always a pleasure to hear from you.

I presume you mean a wait ballet band? If so, you should be able to buy one from your local dance shop. Although, ballet bands often tend to come with the ballet leotard, but if not I would advise you to ask your local dance shop as I'm sure they'll be able to order one in for you.

If any other visitors have more details or guidance on where to buy a ballet band, then please feel free to comment and let us know!

All the best,

Odette
