Career Development Plan - Too Old to Start Ballet?
Dear Odette

A few days ago my aunt took me to my first ballet. I was so amazed by there beauty and grace, and was instantly inspired to learn how to become one of them. I am 14 years old and my only dance experiences are brief lessons in hip hop. I want to do ballet so bad but i read that most people start at a very young age, am I too old?

Hello Kyra,

Thank you for contacting me, it is a pleasure to hear from you.

It is encouraging to hear your enthusiasm on ballet. It is true that ballet is such a beautiful form of expression, it really can capture your amazement.

Always remember, the secret to success is mental discipline as well as physical ability. Along with the three physical secrets, the Seven Secrets, on the 'Seven Secrets of Ballet' page, will give you the key answers of how to thrive in the dance world.

If you love the idea of starting ballet, then nothing should hold you back. It is never too late to start ballet as a hobby, you will always get the same sense of enjoyment and beauty doing it purely for the fun and enjoyment.

In terms of a ballet career, the industry is very demanding and a tough challenge. People tend to start training in ballet at a young age in order to build the strength and techinque that's required to become a professional.

I encourage you to start some ballet lessons and keep your options open. Ballet always needs people with passion, so go for it!

Best Wishes,

Odette
