Career Development Plan - Ballet in Nigeria

PLS ODETTE, I AM 19 YEARS OF AGE AND FROM NIGERIA. THINGS LIKE DANCING BALLET ARE NOT COMMON HERE AND NO PARENTS WOULD HAVE ALLOWED THEIR KID TO GO FOR ANY THING DANCING, ACTING OR GYMNASTIC IN PLACE OF SCHOOLING. IT WAS JUST RECENTLY THAT I HAD THE PASSION FOR DANCING AND BALLET SPECIFICALLY. IT HAS BEEN DIFFICULT FOR ME TO LOCATE A BALLET SCHOOL BUT AM STILL IN THE SEARCH. I CAN DO TWO OR MORE OF THE BALLET POSITIONS BUT I AM STRIVING FOR MORE. I WANT SUCH INSTITUTIONS TO BE COMMON IN NIGERIA.


NOW, MY QUESTION IS, CAN I STILL DANCE BALLET AT MY AGE? I REALLY NEED YOUR HELP BECAUSE IT SEEMS THIS PASSION OF MINE WANTS TO DRIVE ME CRAZY!

Thank you for your message, it is great to hear from you. I understand it must be difficult to fulfill your passion in ballet if there are few schools in your area. Yet it is absolutely so important to have correct teaching and regular classes in ballet, because it gives you the chance to improve and progress.

I always believe it is never too late to dance ballet, but it is whether you are thinking about a hobby or a career that makes the difference. As a hobby, it is always possible. As a career, it proves a challenge to begin at the later age of 19 when many young ballet dancers have already gained a place in a ballet company on their way to a professional career.

Even if you do not have a ballet school right now, you can still educate yourself and learn all you can about ballet to give you a head start. Find your favourite ballerina and watch different ballets online. It all helps to giving you the potential to become a great dancer yourself.
