Dancers have to love what they do. No one can teach someone to dance with soul and spirit. The passion has to come from within, but the body and mind can be taught to accept and adopt the right type of 'learned behavior' to facilitate performance projection.
This page is all about dancers past and present. Please contribute with your opinion too. We a have visitor comments section at the bottom of the page. All dancers are artists and performers. They love the limelight, they are entertainers. Ballet isn't easy, it's a demanding career. You have to be extremely determined and train from an early age (especially focused on pre-pointe training). A lot of hard work is put into every single thing you do. A great dancer possess a large amount of dedication. To get to the top dancers will contain a strict discipline. Becoming a professional dancer takes a long time. The grace and elegance needed is gradually developed into everything you do. It's something that will eventually come naturally without even thinking. They have to know their own ability, it's no good attempting ballet moves they know they aren't capable of. Dancers are constantly at risk. With all the quick movements and partnering lifts, accidents can easily happen. That's why they have to have be very strong.
Most of the famous ballet dancers in history began ballet at a young age. This is so that by their late teenage years they have become more or less fully trained. Despite the fact that their average pay is not very high, they begin to receive further pay as they get more demanding roles. When a dancer gives an impressive performance, they can begin to become more well known in the ballet world.
It takes time to become a well known or famous dancer. You have to have experience and knowledge. It's all a case of luck too. If a major choreographer or ballet director likes you, then your career can only go up. All dancer are unique. Each individual brings a different energy onto the stage. And not forgetting that each person in the audience also has a different opinion.
You have to be very strong-minded. Just because one person doesn't like you, it doesn't mean they are right. That is only one opinion. Dancers have to be determined and most importantly, they have to believe in themselves. No one else can do the job for them.
Remember, just like I did before I went en pointe, ballet students MUST take responsibility for their own strengthening prior to beginning pointe work.
