Career Development Plan - A Ballet Career at Aged 14?

Hello, I am Allysia Kramer
I love ballet with all my soul but I just realized now that is what I want to do with my life and I am 14, so I am not the best dancer. I'm also not that small, I have wide European hips and I am getting a bigger bust. Could I still dance for the smaller companies. i know it would be harder to make it but I am willing to work very hard . I train 6 days a week and I am getting much better. Should I even consider a career in ballet/ modern or not? Thank you for your help,
Allysia

Hello Allysia,
Thank you for your message it's good to hear from you. It is great you have this passion and determination, because that is a key factor when in the run to become a dancer. It depends on so many more factors to whether a ballet career is possible for you, because even for the most talented dancers it still proves a challenge to become a professional. However, if you are absolutely willing and determined to do everything you can, then this already gives you a better chance.

It is easy to fear that you do not have the right physique, or that it might hold you back in ballet. It is true that a lot of elite ballet schools do judge on the facility of your body and it therefore can often be a deciding factor on whether you can pursue a professional career. However, there are actually a lot of differences in the physicality in ballet.

There are many types of bodies in ballet with some dancer’s tall, small, muscular or petite. Depending on which ballet company, there can be huge differences. I would talk to your ballet teacher and discuss your thoughts to become a dancer, as she knows your current ability and could help you focus on which ballet companies you could aim for given your situation.

Most importantly, you need to be surrounded by people who support your ambition. You need so much help through the process of becoming a dancer and the people around you are the ones who can support you best. To become a professional, you need to be in an environment which can help develop your potential.

For now, have a think on what I've said here and you are welcome get back to me if you need.

Best wishes,
Odette
