Career Development Plan - Jobs in the Dance Industry

Hello Odette,

I have recently been thinking about different career paths in dance that are possible for me. I aim to be a dancer when I'm older, but I know it can be very difficult to find a job within the dance industry. Could you please tell me some of the possible career paths in dance and theatre?

Thank you so much!

Holly xxxx

Hi Holly,
Thank you for your message, it is great to hear from you. You ask a very good questions! You are correct in saying it can be extremely tough to find a job in dance world. Even for some of the most talented dancers, you can be left searching year on year to find a secure job to keep you going for at least a season. However, having said that, you have to be open-minded and flexible in yourself to the wide range of dance jobs there are.

It is important to be verstaile as a dancer, because there are a wide range of dance styles out there which means a bigger selection of dance jobs.

Of course, there are the classical ballet companies located around the world. You can look here to see some examples - Ballet Companies. You would need to be trained professionally to have a chance to be accepted for an audition somewhere like this.

Yet there are also career paths in modern dance or contemporary with companies like Rambert and Alvin Ailey. You find even many classically trained dancers moving to a more contempoary side and joining musical theatre or westend. There are dance jobs on cruises or in places like Disney Land, which sounds like fun, but the process of audition is extremely hard with thousands of dancers all going for the same spot.

There are many options in the dance industry, which is why it's a great idea for you to be opening your mind up to them now. Mainly, you have to be very determined to find a job and have a ruthless mindset to not give up! You must see my Auditon Tips page for more guidance on how to cope with the process of auditioning.

I hope these thoughts of mine help you and give you a bigger understanding! Keep in touch.

Best wishes,
Odette
